Denis Curry with bronze Eagle

"The inventive ideas of Denis Curry and complete understanding of the engineering structure in Nature combined with his poetic qualities, make his work more of the spirit than the flesh. I feel that he is on a parallel track to Leonardo da Vinci and his enthusiasm and vitality enable him to turn out an immense variety of inspiring work."
Professor A.H.Gerrard.Sculpture Slade School London.

Swan Bronze, Wingspan 183cm.

Denis Curry studied architecture at Durham University before his service in N Africa and Italy in WW2. He studied Fine Art as a graduate and Post-graduate (Slade School) (1947 -51) winning numerous prizes in both sculpture and painting. This was a distinguished Slade period with William Coldstream, Henry Moore, Stanley Spencer and Reg Butler amongst his teachers. At the Slade, Curry began his research towards a man-powered flying machine which are on-going. (humanpoweredwing.co.uk).
After working as Gerrard’s assistant on numerous large public sculptures, then teaching in London, Curry became Head of Sculpture at Exeter College of Art and subsequently Head of Foundation at Bristol.
"Although Denis Curry’s art is rooted in the study of animals it is wide ranging, encompassing and becoming a part of that long tradition of the relationship of Man and Animal. He is particularly interested in animal flight, embracing both its history and contemporary scientific analysis.
In his paintings and sculpture there is also a quality of brilliance. I do not mean simply the use of light and shade, of sunlight, nor the sensitivity to the structural use of light playing on the bronze, nor the expertise of a skilled craftsman, although there is all that too. It is more than that, as if the life of the animal emanates from within the work itself, permeating our experience of looking."
